INTRODUCTION: SPASA has embarked on a significant sustainability campaign to guarantee a long-term future for pools & spas in Victoria.
Our strategy involves: the Water Neutral Pool program, communications on responsible water/energy use, a pool-water donation program & the physical sourcing of alternative pool water.
Pools & spas add significant social value to our communities and are an iconic feature of the Australian way of life. We are seeing ever-growing numbers of pool & spa owners adopting “water-wise" behaviour by installing pool covers, top-up water tanks, water reducing filters, etc.
There are many steps pool & spa owners can take to preserve our most precious resource. Please take the time to review the below information and that contained in our 2010 Pool & Spa Book here
Do You Need to Fill a Pool ? Use SPASAWater
Ask for SPASAWater by name. The Swimming Pool & Spa Association of Victoria has its own source of groundwater for the filling of pools during stages 3, 3A and 4 water restrictions. SPASA has invested heavily in the construction of a bore to access water from the Werribee aquifer. This aquifer is saline and as such cannot be used for drinking or agricultural purposes - however it is an ideal source of water for swimming pools.
Consumers wishing to arrange the filling of their pools should contact SPASA at

or 9872 4502 for details of an appropriate SPASAWater carrier.
The association’s alternate water supply is comparable to any within the water market today. SPASAWater is the most environmentally responsible water available for the filling of pools and spas. SPASAWater does not impinge on drinking supplies – so if you want to access the most eco-responsible supply, use SPASAWater.
Secondly, a major advantage that SPASAWater has over other alternate filling providers is that the association’s source is balanced for pools. Remember, all water needs to be balanced to a Neutral Langelier scale reading. Water from the tap - or from spring water bores - requires the addition of:
> Sodium Bicarbonate to increase the T.A. (Total Alkalinity)
> Calcium Chloride (or Calcium Sulphate) to increase the hardness
> Hydrochloric acid to balance the pH and in the case of salt chlorinated pools, Sodium Chloride needs to be added.
SPASAWater arrives on site with these balance factors already adjusted, and with 2500 ppm salt level already included. Only minor adjustments need to be made at pool-side. All SPASA members are able to access this water for the filling of their clients pools.
ACTIVITIES
The Water Neutral Pool program
SPASA launched the Water Neutral Pool program 18 months ago. A Water Neutral Pool is one that creates a new standard for swimming pools, it utilises both water saving and water harvesting devices to ensure that it is water-wise.
Purchasing a new pool that is Water Neutral, or retro-fitting an existing pool, will generatre real cost savings through reduced chemical, water and energy use. SPASA strongly encourages all Victorian pool-owners to adopt this new standard.

Water Donation program
SPASA encourages all pool owners to notify us of filtered swim-ready pool water, for donation to our Water Donation program.
The association will then notify participating pool builders - and pool owners with empty pools - of the availability of this water, who may arrange for the collection and re-use of the water. Recycling pool water is a water-wise behaviour.
The association makes no guarantees, or infers that the quality of water is suitable for purpose. Currently, the following pool owners have free pool water available for collection - to advise of your interest, please contact the pool owner direct:

Pool owners wishing to donate water are invited to advise the SPASA office of: volume, location, name and phone number - please email these details to

All donated water must currently be dosed and filtered - swim-ready. Donating water does not entitle the donor to pool water for re-filling when required.
