The Swimming Pool & Spa Association of Victoria (SPASA) CEO, Brendan Watkins said "it is important for swimming pool owners in flood affected areas to put safety first". He also expressed caution about the draining of swimming pools.
“Draining a pool whilst the surrounding soil is saturated creates significant
structural issues for the pool, plumbing and surrounds. SPASA recommends that
pool owners do not empty flood affected pools. The best action to take is to
consult with a pool industry professional - a member of the industry peak body.

“Water pressure under the swimming pool can cause the pool to "pop
out of the ground and cause the shell to float like a boat,” Mr Watkins
said.
“We strongly urge all swimming pool owners to consult a licensed pool builder or
SPASA pool shop / service technican before draining their pool. Emptying a pool
may also void the construction warranty.” Mr Watkins said.
Additionally SPASA Victoria recommends swimming pool owners affected by the
floods take the following safety measures:
• Don’t operate any flood-affected
electrical equipment associated with the pool or spa until it has been
inspected by a licensed electrician. This includes pool pumps and salt
chlorinators.
• Consult a pool professional to ensure
pool fencing is safe and complies with regulations.
• Add 20 – 30 litres of liquid chlorine to
swimming pool to prevent mosquitoes from breeding. Do this as soon as possible
and arrange for the pool to be professionally cleaned.
Pool owners affected by the floods can contact SPASA Victoria on 03 9501 2040
for a list of SPASA members, who are appropriately licensed and qualified pool
professionals.
